Ifs & buts, candy & nuts: Spain are through as winners unless they lose, Ukraine win, and they lose 7 goals in GD to Ukraine. In other words, Spain are through as group winners. Ukraine are through as the 2nd place team with a win or a draw, unless they draw and Saudi Arabia beats Spain by 5 goals. In other words, Ukraine are through with a win or a draw. If they lose to Tunisia they are out. Tunisia must win to go through - any other result and they are out. The Saudis have 2 chances: a win over Spain by 5 goals combined with a draw in the other match, or a win over Spain by 3 goals and a low scoring 1 goal Tunisia over Ukraine. In other words, they are up against it. Got it?

Saudi Arabia-Spain.
Spain are allegedly resting all 11 starters, so for them this will be little more than a training match. I think this means that both Cesc and Reyes will start, which for me personally is interesting in and of itself. Cesc's performance in the 2nd half against Tunisia was flat out brilliant. Watch for his amazing vision on the ball, and the passes that he makes to set up his teammates. His vision and passing remind be of Bergkamp. I hope Reyes plays a blinder and is considered for more playing time in the knockout stage - his pace on the left wing is one of the keys to my upset prediction of Spain over Brasil in the quarterfinals. Saudi Arabia are not good - perhaps the worst team in the tournament.

Saudi Arabia 0-1 Spain.
Spain's B team dominated this match, created two dozen chances, but only managed to convert one. Better finishing and this would have been 4-0 or 5-0. Reyes played well, made chances, but continued to show a lack of finishing ability. He could have had a hat trick by halftime. He did create a lot though, and it was his beatiful cross in from the left that was headed in by Juanito for Spain's goal. Spain cruise though as group winners, and will face whomever comes out of group H in 2nd place. I haven't seen anything through 3 matches to make me second guess my pretournament assertion that this is a team that can beat Brasil, or my prediction that they will.

Las Chicas son muy felices.

Ukraine-Tunisia.
This is the matchup to watch; it is basically a knockout game if you believe that Spain will not lose to the Saudis. Ukraine need a win or draw; Tunisia need an outright win. If you are a neutral then you want a back and forth affair where the outcome is in doubt until the end, like Croatia-Australia yesterday. Only without Graham Poll as referee. I like Ukraine to win fairly easily, like say 3-1.

Ukraine: looking to score on and off the field.

Ukraine 1-0 Tunisia.
Plain and simple: Tunisia got screwed royally by yet another utterly inept refereeing performance, and Ukraine don't really deserve to go through. Before you snark that I am just being a homer for the African team...

Tunisia had a man sent off at the end of the 1st half for 2 yellows. I did not see either foul since I was watching the Spain match, but I will assume that both (and the sending off) were legit. Now then- the 2nd half was a boring listless match, and Ukraine were playing boring listless football, seemingly not even trying to score, which was dangerous and foolish since a single Tunisia goal would knock them out. Through 65 minutes, with a man advantage, Ukraine had 0 2nd half shots. Not shots on goal. Shots.

Tunisia win a free kick outside the Ukraine box. Tunisia dude shoots over the wall, and a Ukraine dude raides his hands over his head and clearly handles the ball, but nothing is called. Terrible call that was so obvious that it does not fall into the category of subjective, like the Ghana-US penalty did. This was a hand raised over head which clearly hit the ball. Terrible, and Tunisia should be up 1-0 (or at least 80% chance they should be up 1-0, since that is the typical penalty conversion rate). You would think this close call would shock Ukraine to life, but no, another 10 minutes played and still not a single shot for Ukarine after playing 30 minutes with a man advantage. Then Sheva runs into the box, and he and a defender are shoulder to shoulder. Sheva goes down, and it seems clear in real time that there is no contact and that Sheva either fell down or dived. Penalty. Are you shitting me? Replays clearly show that Sheva fell because he tripped over his own feet. A second utterly inept call. Sheva converts the penalty, Ukraine are up 1-0, and their only shot of the 2nd half thusfar was one given to them by the referee illegitimately. Tunisia should be up 1-0 and just need to hold on to go through. Instead they are 0-1 down and need to score 2 goals in the last 15 minutes to go through while playing 10 v 11. It was the kind of shit that make you seriously wonder if the Ukrainian mob was somehow involved.

No disrespect to LD, but this was an absolute joke.

It didn't happen. Ukraine managed their first shot in the 84th minute (miskicked 10 yards over the bar), and finally manage a shot on goal in the 89th min (they added a second in the last 30 seconds of the match).

But hey, such is life. It's survive and advance at this point, and merited or not, that is just what Ukraine did. Tunisia are out and Ukraine are through. Should be the other way around. Ukraine have looked worse than any team that are going through so far. They will face whomever comes out on top of group G this afternoon.

Oh, and Ukraine pretty much have the Team Hair award at this point. Like a 22 man 80s glam band, this lot.

Ifs & buts, candy & nuts: Togo are out. France must win; if they win and there is a winner in the SWI-SK match, then France are through in 2nd place no matter what. If SWI-SK draw, then France must win 2-0 at a minimum to go through, as all 3 will be tied on 5 points and it will come down to goal difference. South Korea are through as group winners with a win. They are through with a draw as long as France do not win, if France win then the 5-5-5 scenario is in play. SK can lose and still go through, as long as France fail to beat Togo. Ditto for Switzerland: win and they are through, draw and they are through unless France win and then it's the 5-5-5, lose and they still go through as long as France fail to win. Got it?

Togo-France.
Togo have played unexpectedly well but have nothing to show for it. They are a former French African colony playing their much more heralded former colonizers without their star captain Zidane. Sound familiar? They are like a baseball team who has already been eliminated but can still affect the pennant race depending on how they play against one of the contenders. Hopefully Arsenal striker Adebayor will have a good match and be awarded a penalty of he is obviously tripped in the box.

And what of France? First off, Happy 30th birthday to my boy Patrick Vieira.

Bon Anniversaire PV4.

Amazingly, Zidane's birthday is today as well. Two foreign born sons of immigrants playing on the same French national team and sharing the same birthday - that's your bizarro stat of the day, like the Croatia-Aussie cross pollination stats yesterday. With Zizou's card accumulation suspension PV4 will likely wear the captain's armband, as he did before Zizou came out of international retirement. I hope he bosses the midfield as a birthday present to himself instead of relying on TH1412 for his birthday presents as he has stated to the press.

Speaking of TH1412, today is his chance. With all the talk of him being handcuffed as long as France is Zidane's team, it seems like this is his chance to play in similar way for France that he does for Arsenal, where the team goal is to feed him the ball, create space for him, and allow him to be the creative force for himself and his teammates. My brain thinks that this is a natural fit, that Titi will kick ass if they play like this, and perhaps it will even benefit France that Zidane cannot play. But then I remember back to qualifying where they had this same scenario and their results were so uninspiring that they begged Zidane out of retirement to help them qualify (granted it was a really tough group with Switzerland, Ireland, and Israel). So I don't know what to make of it all; I just hope Henry seizes the moment and shows that he is fully capable of a big performance in a big match.

French manager Domenech showed in the SK match what people have been whispering for a while - that he is pretty much a clueless coach. Playing Barthez, staying with Wiltord way too long, bringing on Trezeguet waaaay too late, subbing Zidane in the last minutes, all tres stupid. I hope that France can rise up and win in spite of him. He is not as much of a handicap as Sven is for England, but he is by no means an asset.

Sorry Togo - you know that I love the African teams, but France are my boys and I need a big performace tomorrow in their must win by 2 goals match. I think Senegalese born PV4 plays a birthday boy blinder against the Africans, and Henry steps up and scores two goals. France do the job 3-1, with Adebayor getting one for Togo. How's that for an Arsenal homer prediction?

Absolutely ridiculous.

I only hope that if France advance the ball more than a yard over the goalline, that the referee or his assistant actually see it this time.

Togo 0-2 France.
"2-nil to the Arsenal..."

0-0 at half time, although France were creating nearly all the chances, they were being like Sweden in their first two matches - a million chances but horrid finishing. It really seemed like Henry, Trezeguet, and Ribery were in a contest to see who could miss the most silver platter goal scoring chances. If you were scoring at home Ribery barely won out over Trez, with Henry a close third but not without 2 stunning misses himself.

In the 2nd half the birthday boy stepped up and bossed it, scoring the first and creating the 2nd by heading over to his mate Titi. Myles said it best:

Today was Patrick Vieira's 30th birthday and he won his 90th cap and he was captain and he won the game for France with those two runs into the box, that shot, that header. Two majestic interventions, two goals.

To: Patrick & France
From: Patrick
I hope you enjoy this goal.
Happy Birthday, and Happy Knockout Stage.
XOXO PV4

Patty was even smart enough to shoot the ball all the way into the back of the net, so the referee could not disallow it. And Titi took his goal well, like the cool assassin he is, to kill the game.

"Who says I don't play big in big games?" Qui?
That's what I thought.

Well deserved, and they are through in 2nd place. They play Spain in one of the 2 sexiest round of 16 matchups (the other being Portugal-Holland).

Oh, and they seemed more dangerous without Zidane, for what it's worth. Anything better than completely inept finishing and it would have been 3-0 by halftime. That being said, they were playing the weakest team in the group, so the jury is still out on this issue.

Switzerland-South Korea.
Plain and simple I want Switzerland to win. I think that they are a great young team and play very well together as a team without a superstar. I think that they are better then South Korea, and I think they can win, although something tells me that this match will be a draw and the dreaded 5-5-5 scenario will occur. South Korea is dangerous, pacey, and love to attack, so I should be a big fan because I generally like those things. The problem is that I feel like they have been the luckiest team at the WC thusfar. Down 0-1 to Togo, they benefitted when Togo had a player sent off and they played the last 35 minutes 11 v 10, where their relentless running was key to reversing their defecit. Fortunate but deserved I suppose, because the sending off was basically legit. But they absolutely did not deserve anything other than a loss in the France match. France scored two goals by the rules but were only credited with one, and then SK scored the softest of goals when Barthez remembered that he was a buffoon and Gallas decided it would be more fun to watch the ball go into the net and then kick it a la Nick Nolte in Blue Chips rather than just kick it out to begin with and prevent the goal. Lucky, lucky, South Korea. I respect their attitute, style of play, and their insane fans (easily the loudest of any team), but I want them out because plain and simple they should have 3 points and France should have 4. Plus they don't have 2 young talented Arsenal centrebacks like Switzerland does.

I want Switzerland to win 2-1, but something tells me that this will be a 2-2 draw and we'll all have to break out the calculators and compute goal difference and goals scored to break the tie (I just hope it doesn't get down to "drawing lots").

Switzerland 2-0 South Korea.
First goal was a great header by Arsenal centreback Phillippe Senderos, who picked up a bloody face while scoring. It was cool to see him celebrate his goal with joy and not even really notice the blood that was trickling down from the bridge of his nose. Further proof against the ignorant assertions that 1) soccer is not a contact sport and 2) soccer players are sissies. Good stuff, and what a day for Arsenal (Reyes cross, PV4 goal, PV4 header, Henry goal, and this).

PS4 channeling Jesse "The Body" Ventura:
"I ain't got time to bleed."

The 2nd goal was yet another complete farce by the referee. The linesman put his flag up for offsides, the Koreans stopped playing, Frei put it in the net, and amazingly the ref then allowed the goal. Complete lunacy by the ref - more of the same. Fire all these jokers and get some proper refs for the knockout stage please.

It didn't end up making much of a difference, because at that poont South Korea would have needed 2 additional goals to go through, and it was late, so this alone did not screw them over like it did Tunisia earlier. But still, just a trainwreck by the referee. Forget all the talk about the ridiculous amount of cards - these blatant fuckups need to stop.

The Swiss top the group and will play Ukraine in the round of 16. Not the sexiest matchup on paper but should be really, really good. I think I actually like the Swiss at this point...

Swindle On Soccer, Vol. 6: USA Postmortem

Swindle On Soccer, Vol. 1: Staggering To Life
Swindle On Soccer: An Introduction

Seen I Shouldn't Be Alive? It's the show on the Discovery Channel where people review in painstaking detail their brush with death and impossible survival. My favorite one involves a guy who was flying an ultralight over some terrible stretch of African wasteland when something in the engine went [ping!] in a bad way, sending craft and pilot spiralling to the ground in a most unpleasant way.

When he comes to, Mr. "Oh, yeah, such a great idea to fly an ultralight around Africa" finds that he's alive, but has broken something. Several somethings, actually; from my dim memories, it seemed like the guy had snapped every especially painful bone in his body, pelvis, femur, ass, pain-bone...all of 'em at once. The actor screams a lot and grabs everything south of his nipples when he does this, dragging himself across what appears to be a field of broken glass to shade.

The rest of the episode gets worse as he tries to survive until help arrives. It's not pretty. He's got no water. There's gas everywhere. Vultures literally circle. He's bleeding, and unsure of what his future is. He tries to signal with a flare gun and shoots himself in the eye; he resigns himself to death as a meteorite falls from the sky and scores a direct hit on his crotch. Then, just when there's a glimmer of hope, he dies.

Just kidding! No, of course he lives. And we will, too, as U.S. soccer fans whose ultralight (work that metaphor! work it) of expectation has put us facefirst into the scree at the speed of a very, very swiftly falling object. The US came out in '02 and showed the world that they, too, had the makings of a budding world power. In '06, we came out and showed the world and showed that we...we had the potential to be another Nigeria, just without the exciting shots from thirty yards and cool team name (the Super Eagles. Yeah, the Super Eagles.) Or maybe Tunisia.

Revise that last statement: Tunisia actually scored three times as many goals on the way to racking up an identical record in their group. We're not quite up to Tunisia's level in soccer--but we can dream, can't we?

Mitigating factors flying up here: Group of Death! Atrocious refereeing! Playing in Europe! Bulllllllllshit. Say it in a long, Tommy Lee Jones accent when you say it, since that will add the right edge to the sentiment. Good teams win when they're supposed to, especially when given the golden chance of resurrecting their vibe, attitude, and World Cup chances in a single span of ninety minutes versus a side missing two badass strikers making their first World Cup appearance. They don't die the minute Fortuna turns on them for an instant and spend the rest of their match effectively rolling on the ground as someone happily pours gas on the flames.

The US died for 40 minutes in the second half. Forty straight agonizing minutes, just gasping like an asthmatic reaching for an inhaler held inches away from their grasp. One, possibly two real scoring chances vanished in the haze of bad passes, uncontested Ghanaian time-whittling, and endless scenes of Ghanaians doing their best imitation of the Azzuri, lolling about on the ground grabbing the wrong leg while watching the clock with one open eye.

The bad is bottomless. Arena is done, and American fans are already furtively polishing a certain German coach's nameplate while Bruce gets his things in a white cardboard box and heads for the door. (Please, no stealing of office supplies on the way out. Those things add up, you know.) Landon Donovan, already put in a bad position by Arena's tactical cowardice, played like EuroDonovan, the one who couldn't hang on as second team German league player. Reyna finished his career as an indecisive, uncreative midfielder after an otherwise stellar career as the face of American World Cup soccer. And Bobby Convey created a vacuum of opportunity or hope each time he touched the ball, sending passes out of bounds, botching potential shots, and generally performing one long, sad pantomime of ineptitude. Everyone else watched in horror and knocked the ball around like it was covered in hantavirus.

Done for the U.S. There's plenty of fine soccer to go, though. The quality of the matches will improve with teams like Saudi Arabia and the United States out, actually. Italy faces a Brazil team with a rapidly improving and ever-svelter Ronaldo, now Brazil's leading scorer evah after a nutsoid, beautiful match against Japan. Prepare for seventeen minutes of injury time as Italian players grab legs, whine, and send text messages to their mistresses and mothers while pleading for yellow cards and penalty kicks in drammatico fashion.

Ghana and Australia bring the cinderella card. Germany, Spain, and England bring the "gigantor teams loaded with the burden of grandeur." And the best players in the world are, for the most part, still on the field playing spectacular soccer in the world's biggest free-firing fiesta in Germany. Plenty to watch, plenty to gawk at, and plenty to savor in the next few weeks.

At least that's what we'll be telling ourselves for the next week. There's a Ghanaian who works in the office. Walking in this morning, a poster hung on the door: a tombstone covered in black stars with a single American flag in the middle. The caption: REST IN PEACE--JUNE 12, 2006--JUNE 22, 2006. She said that Accra's been effectively closed for the past 24 hrs due to uncontrollable revelry. Streets jammed with people covered in green, yellow, and red. Here the lead story is Isiah Thomas finishing the demolition of the Knicks.

Where's my fucking Phil Steele guide...

Day 14 Random Thoughts / Open Thread

It has seemed to me that general American interest in this World Cup is greater than any in the past, but are we really at the point where work is significantly being affected? I'm off to watch the matches, and then go to work. Today has a chance to be amazing. Enjoy.

Ifs & buts, candy & nuts: Damn, this might take a while, and if you want the short version then just know that each team can either go through or go home depending on how each game shakes out. Italy need only a draw to advance; with a win they will top the group. Czech Republic win the group with a wn over Italy; they will also go through as the 2nd place team if both matches end in a draw (which as I said earlier would be total BS since they got their asses handed to them by Ghana). A loss and they are out no matter what happens in the other match. If Ghana beats the US then they are through, as group winners if CZE-ITA ends in a draw or in 2nd place if CZE-ITA has a winner. Ghana go through in 2nd place with a draw if Italy beat CZE, but if they draw and the other match has a winner then they are out. A loss and they are out no matter what. The US are the only team in the group who are not guaranteed to go through with a win. To go through they need a win plus an Italy win over the Czechs. Basically damn near anything can happen. Holy shit. Got it?

Ghana-United States.
I wonder what emotions Ghana-born, US bred, and the next great hope for US soccer Freddy Adu is having today as he prepares to watch his two nations battle for World Cup survival.

If the US is going to win, they will need goalkeeper Jim Furyk to have a man of the match type performance, where the ball is Superman, the net is a beautiful damsel in distress, and he is kryptonite.

I'm not hating on the US, beacuse they are a compelling story and I was really impressed with their performance against Italy. That being said, I pimped Ghana before the tournament, then after they played Italy close but lost I told you that they would beat the Czechs and the US and go through. They were kind to make me look smarter than I am, and from what I have seen there is no reason to change my story now. Ghana will beat the US because they are better and have played considerably better over the first two matches.

Yes they are missing 2 offensive players, but more importantly the US are missing two key defensive cogs, a starting centreback (Pope) and the starting defensive holding midfielder (Mastroeni), whose likely replacement, John O'Brien, might not be fully fit. Ghana will be less affected by their losses even though lots is being made that both dudes scored against CZE. They still have quality players who can put the ball in the net, and replacement striker Pimpong looked very dangerous as a substitute against CZE, even if it was against 10 men. Also, playing the 2nd half with 9 men likely left the US a bit tired physically but more importantly may have been emotionally exhausting, while Ghana come in confident and comparatively less tired off their thrashing of CZE, where they played the last 30 minutes with a man advantage. Finally, Ghana have demonstrated that they can score goals, whereas USA's leading and only scorer is Italian defender Zaccardo.

I'll take Ghana to beat the US 2-0 or 3-1. What I least want to happen is for the US to beat Ghana AND for Italy to get a result against Czech, which would send ITA and CZE through and USA and Ghana home, and piss me off greatly.

Ghana 2-1 United States.
I didn't articulate this very well in the pregame show, but what I wish could have happened was for the US and Ghana to go through. Unfortuantely this was the only scenario that was not possible, so I figured no matter what team made it through I would be happy.

The match was even and a draw would have been a fair result. Yes the penalty was soft, but although it changed the complexion of the match, in the end it technically did not matter as a draw would have seen the same teams go through. The US goal was brilliantly taken, and McBride's diving header off the post would have been as well.

Party time in Accra, until they realize that
they get Brasil next and Essien is suspended

Full credit to Ghana, they did what they had to do. And if you are pissed at that call, don't blame them blame the referee. I will also say that Ghana did not play as well as they did in the first two matches. Part of that is in the 2nd half they did not need to go forward, because the US would have to score 2 goals to knock them out. That being said, they were a bit too Italian in the last half hour, with the time wasting and rolling around - disappointing. If I am going to get mad at Italy's incessant anti-Joga Bonito, then I have to be consistent and criticize Ghana, even though they are a guessed cinderella that came good.

The Black Stars made Kanu look
much smarter than he actually is.

The US may feel hard done by today, but the truth is that 1) they didn't lose it today, they lost it last Monday against CZE with an inexplicably listless performance 2) this, not the much heralded group C, was the group of death, and the US were unfortunate to be drawn into it 3) the team played way too defensive in their 1st and 3rd matches {Italy was about hanging on for dear life}, especially today, where they didn't really show any urgency or desperation until the last 25 minutes.

Blame the players or blame the coach? Both are deserving, but for me Arena made a mess of this WC. In the past he has always put his players in good positions to succeed. This year he simply did not. Choosing to ditch 4-4-2, play 4-5-1, and play defensive rather than attacking soccer was a bad decision. I know it is a bitch of a group, but dude - play your style, play to your strengths, take your best shot, and if it's not enough then so be it. Changing tactics was silly in my opinion. Also, ripping your players in public is never a smart idea - another huge screwup, that took away from team chemistry, togetherness, and confidence.

That's right, Bruce: time to go.

The players? First off, I thought Dempsey was really good - always liked him since I saw his sweet Babe Ruth point and swing home run goal celebration last year - and not just the goal. I thought "Gooch" played very well also. Just about every one else was good in small patches but inconsistent. And Landon Donovan? Dude is Bode Miller, except that is disrespectful to Bode Miller who is a world champion and proven elite skier who simply had a bad Olympics. I mean it more in a hype versus reality kind of way. Plainly put, he was very poor. His chance today was by no means a sitter, but is was a good chance and he miskicked it into row Q. And that free kick on the edge of the box int he last 15 mintutes - any good player does better then floating it weakly into row G. Yes he was playing in that dumbass 4-5-1, and coach continually ripping him in the press was shitbird on Arena's part, but this was LD's time to stand up and be counted, and he failed to answer the bell.

Finally, I don't want to rip on a dude who screwed up his knee in his last WC game for the US in his career, but Reyna's brain freeze leading to the first goal so very US Soccer circa anything before 2002. The replay of his hesitation, mild panic, dispossesion and inability to do anyhing about it, and the dude walking in and scoring a goal while he hopelessly lays on the ground perfectly encapsullates US Soccer; ever improving, almost able to hang with the best in the world, but still prone to errors that make the rest of the world soccer snobs laugh and say "they are tres effete and OMG so not ready for prime time".

As a team, I have to reiterate what I wrote after the CZE loss. In 2002 their biggest strength was their team speed, and that they ran their socks off continually causing lots of problems with their pace, specifically Beasley and Donovan. This year we only saw that in occasional bits and pieces, especially Beasley - we only saw flashes of the danger rather than it beng a near constant. Did they get slower in the last 4 years? Not that much - again I think it is down to playing 4-5-1 which naturally puts them in a defensive mode.

They have talent, and by 2010 we will know whether Freddy Adu is the real deal Tiger Woods of soccer that Nike and USSA so badly want him to be or an overmarketed overhyped average player. It's time for a change, some new energy, some regrouping, seasoning more players in Europe, and coming back for another strong run towards South Africa 2010. Thanks for all you have done, Bruce Arena, but it is time that you and US Soccer go your seperate ways.

Just like the team: good, but not
on the same level as the world's best

Don't write off US Soccer - we are a talented nation, a sleeping giant that is slowly waking up over a 20 year span. This year we just hit snooze, fell back asleep, and overslept. But one day we will arise and compete at the highest levels, and I fully expect to see this in my lifetime.

Czech Republic-Italy.
The key for CZE is the health of Koller and Baros. They may or may not play due to injury. Given the circumstances I guess they both will play; the question will be how close to 100% they are. If these two are close to fit, the Czechs have a great shot to win, and I actually like them to beat Italy. Without them near their best, I look for a draw or an Italy win.

I sure am looking forward to new Arsenal boy Rosicky playing again.

Italy have endured a media shitstorm since their embarrassing (in their eyes) failure to beat a 9 man US team. They feel like they should be through already and now it is possible that they will crash out of the group stage just as they did in Euro2004. The amount of pressure that they are under can only be described as massive, and even that is an understatement. The longer these matches go on without them looking to go through, the tighter they will get.

I think anything can happen here, so I'll semi cop-out and say that Italy win if Koller and Baros do not play or are less than 50%, and if the two play at 80% then it will be a draw, and if Koller and Baros play and are 100% fit then the Czechs win and Italy will dread getting off the plane at home, where they will be pelted with tomatoes and then have to once again deal with the scandal that everyone there has been trying not to think about since June 9.

Czech Republic 0-2 Italy.

Only saw bits and pieces, as I was focusing on the other match and there was no sound on the TV showing this one. Saw both Italy goals, didn't see the red card for CZE, and never saw Koller so I assume that he didn't play. That's about it. Italy are through as group winners and will face whomever finishes 2nd in group F later today (see below).

This mullet was so outrageous that it got sent off.

Ifs & buts, candy & nuts: Everyone is technically still alive. The only way Brasil will not win the group is if they lost to Japan and Australia beat Croatia, and the combined goal differential of those two wins is greater than 4. Australia need only a draw to go through as the 2nd place team, and can win the group if the scenario above occurs. Croatia need to beat Australia and they are 2nd, unless Japan beat Brasil by 2 more goals than they beat Australia. Japan are up against it: they need to beat Brasil by 3 goals and then have Croatia beat Australia by only 1. Got it?

Japan-Brasil.
As great as all of the national anthems have been, live, uninterrupted, and not talked over on Univision, this one will be the most interesting to watch. Zico is 1) one of the great Brasilian soccer heroes of all time and 2) the current coach of Japan. He has already spoken multiple times about being concerned about his emotions during this match and the playing of the anthem, and has stated the several times he has literally not been able to sleep because he feels so conflicted about it. The closest thing I can think of is if Larry Bird ever coached the Pacers in game 7 of the NBA Finals against the Celtics. If Indiana and Massachusetts were seperate nations with different languanges and extremely different cultures, that is.

Japan are not that good. Brasil are really really good. That's about all the analysis I am going to get into.

34 min.: HOLY SHIT! 1-0 Japan! Que golaso too, after Brasil had 10 close chances, they nicked one on the break. GAME ON.

35th min.: "Ladies and Gentlemen, the part of Buster Douglas will be payed tonight by Japan, while the part of Mike Tyson will be played by Brasil. Thank you and enjoy the show."

43rd min.: 1-1. Mike Tyson lands a big punch. Cross into the box on the right, headed back across to the left by I think Kaka, and headed into the goal by Ronaldo, who is seeking all time goal scoring records. Beautiful goal.

Half Time. 1-1. Can minnows Japan swim with the big fish again in the 2nd half? I'm off to the pub to find out.

Japan 1-4 Brasil
.
Answer: Umm, NO.

"Ladies and gentlemen: we apologize for an earlier mistake. Actually the part of "Hurricane" Peter McNeely, not Buster Douglas, will be played by Japan. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope that you enjoy the rest of the show."

Brasil dance into the knockout stage

Once Brasil went up 2-1 I gave most of my attention to the other match, and it looked like from what little I saw that Brasil dominated the 2nd half much like the first, except this time they put the ball into the back of the net rather than over and around it. They get Ghana sans Essien in the round of 16.

Croatia-Australia.
It seems everyone are just penciling in Australia in the 2nd place spot, and I hope the Aussies get a result since they are one of my sleeper teams, but Croatia are capable of beating them. People seem to be writing them off, but they are not bad by any stretch.

Australia have 7 players of Croatian heritage, and Croatia have 3 players who were born in Australia. Who would have ever thought that these two countries would be so intertwined? Bizarre but interesting.

Should be another really exciting, free flowing game, as Croatia are all about going forward: they are not nicknamed "the Brasil of Eastern Europe" for nothing. And if you saw Brasil-Australia or read Swindle's excellent article about Guus Hiddink then you know how exciting and offensive minded they are. All the attention will be on Brasil, but I expect that match to be not-so close, while this one has a good chance of being a cracker. I'll take Australia to get it done 3-1.

1-0 to Croatia. The Pizza Hut Tablecloths grab the lead on a great free kick. Free medium Pepsi with purchase of personal pan pizza for one and all.

1-1. The Socceroos equalize on a penalty kick in the 40th minute.

Half Time. 1-1.

Croatia 2-2 Australia.

Shielas celebrate the blokes' success.

Great 2nd half which was essentially a knockout match. At 1-1 the Aussie were going through at Croatia's expense, but then the biggest goalkeeping howler of the tournament by Schwartzer gifted Croatia a 2-1 lead, and meant that they would be going through and Australia would be going back sown under. But just like a typical Guus Hiddink, Australia went all out attack towards the end and Kewell got the deserved equalizer in about the 80th minute. 2-2 and once again Australia looks to go through and Croatia were out unless they could get a goal. They almost did, and a Croat dude found himself so wide open in the box that he hesisated almost in disbelief and failed to get a shot off in a situation where he certainly should have scored. The Socceroos held on, and will face Italy in the round of 16.

Pizza Hut will be closed for the remainder of the World Cup.

Ifs & buts, candy & nuts: Iran are out. Angola's only shot is to win and have Portugal beat Mexico, then they will be tied and it will come down to goal difference. They are currently 3 behind so they would need both victories to be by a combined 4 goals or more; anything less and they are out. Any kind of result for Mexico and they are through, and can even go throuh with a loss unless the situation described above occurs. A win for Mexico and they win the group. Portugal are through, it is just a matter of seeding. Any result for them and they win the group, while a loss places them 2nd behind Mexico. Got it?

First place in this group plays 2nd in group C, while 2nd place plays the group C winner. With the two group C teams being Argentina and Holland, it is a matter of pick you poison for whatever 2 teams from this group go through.

Portugal-Mexico.
This match was going to be very interesting to watch until Portugal coach Scolari decided not to play 5 starters who are sitting on a yellow card already, because if they were to pick up a 2nd yellow then they would be suspended for Portugal's round of 16 match (even though after the end of the group stage the card accumulations are wiped clean, picking up a 2nd yellow in the third round means missing the first match of the knockout round). So Big Phil is essentially saying "I don't care if we draw Argentina or Holland, but I do care that I have all of my best players available for that match". I can see his point, and even go so far as to say he is being smart in a wily kind of way. But this game has looked juicy since the draw came out, and now it will probably be much less of a match than it had the potential to be simply because one team is not trying its best. Part of me appreciates what he is doing, and part of me wants Mexico to beat them and win the group on general principle. Hopefully it will just be a good match.

6th min.: 1-0 Portugal. Nice finish by Nuno Maniche. Interestingly, Portugal's goal is not significant not for them but for Angola first and then Mexico.

18th min.: The Mexican fans rival the SouthKoreans for title of loudest. They also do a college football thing leading up to a goal kick. They yell something as the keeper runs up and then scream out something else when the ball is kicked. The net effect sounds very cool - think kickoff cheer "Gooo Dawgs!" or "Roooollll Tide! Good stuff. Anybody know what they are chanting, and/or what it means?

Chica caliente doing pseudo CFB chants? Muy bueno.

24th min.: Penal! Rafita Marquez is called for a handball in the box, and after seeing the replay you really cannot argue with it - almost looks intentional.

24th min.: Simao buries it. 2-0 Portugal. Angola rejoice.

30th min.: Just when it looks like they might get routed, Mexico finally wake up out of their slumber and score on a header into the corner off a corner kick. Very nice goal by Fonseca. Game on.

Half Time: 2-1 Portugal.

56th min.: Penal! Penal! Penal! Mexico can draw level and put Angola up against it...

57th min.: Missed. Instead of kicking it into the goal, dude decided to kick a futbol Americano field goal. That sucker would have been good from 50+ yards. A bad miss. Bullet dodged for Angola.

61st min.: Red mist descends on Gelsenkirchen. Perez sent off for Mexico after receiving 2nd yellow, either for diving or for saying something to the referee (not sure which). Mexico will play the last 30 minutes 10 v 11.

67th min.: Angola have scored to go 1-0 up on Iran. The plot thickens...

81st min.: Iran score in the other match to make it 1-1. Joy for Mexico and Angola are totally up against it now, needing a winner and then another 2 goals between them and Portugal in the last 10 minutes.

Full Time.

Portugal 2-1 Mexico.
Well done, Mexico. You are through, unless Angola score 3 goals in the final 4 minutes. In other words, you are through.

Portugal top the group and no matter which group C team they play in the round of 16, the matchup will be awesome.

Figo: forget trading shirts, I want the sombrero

Iran-Angola.
Angola are Pearl Jam: still alive.

Still alive into the 3rd match?
Impressive.

They have everything to play for. Look for another inspired and spirited performance by and African team. Oh, and this is your last chance to look at Loco, a man whose haircut matches his name, and may walk away with the non-mullet haircut prize category when The Golden Mullet is awarded after the competition. He wears #20 for Angola and plays centreback. I'll take 2-1 Angola.

Goodbye, Loco. You & your "hair" will be missed.

6th min.: Portugal scored to go up 1-0 on Mexcio. Joy for Angola. They are very much alive and kicking at this point. They and Portugal must win by a combined total of 4 goals for Angola to beat out Mexico.

24th min.: Simao buries a penalty in the othe match to put Portugal up 2-0. Angola rejoice.

Again, Dubya: if you don't want to talk to them, may I?

30th min.: Mexico pull one back. 2-1 Portugal. A case, literally, of two steps forward, one step back for Angola.

Half Time. 0-0. Portugal lead Mexico 2-1. Nothing against Mexico, but at this point how can you not be pulling for Angola, a nation without television, to shock the world and make the final 16?

53rd min. Mexico miss a penalty that could pretty much put Angola to the sword, but it is badle missed. Still POR 2-1 MEX.

57th min. Mexico have a dude sent off. Angola, amazingly, are still alive. If they can nick a goal then they will hope that Portugal can score twice with their man advantage. It's a longshot, but there's still a chance. Trick is they haven't scored a goal yet in the WC; 240 minutes and counting...

60th min.: Holy Shit they have scored! 1-0 Angola. Now there is hope. Angola's adrenaline is high, and they are pressing ahead looking for more.

76th min.: 1-1. Iran get a leveller on a good header from a corner. Joy for Mexico and Angola are totally up against it now, needing a winner and then another 2 goals between them and Portugal in the last 10 minutes.

Full Time.
Angola 1-1 Iran.
Angola were unable to pull of the miracle shocker, but just the fact that they even competed with Mexico for that 2nd spot until the last 10 minutes of the 3rd match is flat-out remarkable. And they sure did themselves proud as no hopers who everyone expected would finsh 0-3 with a goal differential in negative double digits. A 1 goal loss to Portugal and two draws. Perhaps the most impressive suprise performance of the tournament, Ecuador and Ghana included. They will be greeted as heroes upon their return home.

Ifs & buts, candy & nuts: S&M and Cote D'Ivoire are out, and they are playing only for pride. Argentina and Holland are playing for seeding: Holland must win to top the group; a draw of an Argentina win and they top the group. Got it?

The winner of this group plays the runner up of group D, and 2nd place plays the winner of group D.

Holland-Argentina
The tastiest matchup in the group stage, hands down. The world has been looking forward to this match since the day the draw was announced - hopefully it will live up to some of its potential of being an amazing match. This is a good teaser for the Clash of the Titans-like matchups that we will likely see in the knockout stage. All-star game talent on the field and on the bench as well.

Messi is starting. Sweet.

19th min.: Never dawned on me until now, but Holland's Dirk Kuyt is either Boris Becker ot Johnny from Cobra Kai in Karate Kid. Not sure which.

28th min.: Argentina smash one off the crossbar. Good match thusfar, but it really needs a goal to open up.

Half time. 0-0. Entertaining, but again - this match needs a goal to really open up and "come to a boil" as the Brits say.

Holland 0-0 Argentina
.
A really entertaining scoreless draw with lots of open play and good chances, but never quite lived up to the hype and expectation. Argentina will play Mexico and Holland will play Portugal.

Messi is just special. Wow.

Ivory Coast-Serbia & Montenegro
It is sad, but Ivory Coast are the best team who will not advance to the knockout stage. We can only hope that the Civil War cease fire does not end the moment after the final whistle is blown, cause Bono had us all feeling so good, and that would be so very sad.

Half Time. Ivory Coast 0-2 S&M. Don't know, haven't seen, watching the other. Are Les Elephants being whipped by S&M?

Ivory Coast 3-2 Serbia & Montenegro.
"2-nil down, 3-2 up, we beat your ass and split you up" is what they should be chanting. Good for Les Elephants - they are definitely the best team not advancing to the knockout stage, and I am happy for them to get their first World Cup win. That team dance celebration was sweet. Hopefully the celebrations from this will will postpone the resumption of their civil war for a few more days.
