War Owl

Yesterday's Euro2008 qualifier in Helsinki between Finland and Belgium was held up for almost 10 minutes when a giant Eagle Owl decided to go all Auburn at Jordan-Hare during the first half, swooping into the stadium, flying from goalpost to goalpost, and buzzing some players in between.

Finland went on to win the match, prompting speculation that a new tradition will start whereby Finnish fans will scream "War Owl!" to each other to the bewilderment of fans of other nations, since contextually it makes no fucking sense at all.

Auburn University was so flattered that they are seriously considering adding the Owl as yet another mascot to go with their already in place triumvirate of Tigers, War Eagles, and Plainsmen.

When reached for comment, the Highbury Squirrel said "Owl, please. I was doing that shit last year. Poser."

Wasn't that cool? I loved how totally incapacitated everyone was - nobody knew what to do! You can't try to scare him off, you'll look like a monster. And heaven forbid you should clang one off the crossbar and injure him, so you've got to stop the game! I'll have to look at it again to see how many times the game officials and coaches shrugged their shoulders.

My wife and daughter thought it was hysterical. They both stopped what they were doing to watch. About five minutes in, my wife asked when the Quiditch was going to resume.

You might not be aware of this, but I went to Rice University. A few minutes after the owl cleared out, my daughter asked me who I was rooting for, just to get a rise out of me. "Well I've GOT to root for Finland now, don't I?"

Nice dude. I would love to know exactly what those Finnish fans were chanting, as it's pretty clear that there are 2 different chants in homage and praise of the owl.

Regal, regal, War-Damn-Eagle; Kick'em in the Butt Big Blue? Must lose something in the translation.

It's too bad this wasn't a more important game, or it would go down in Finnish football lore forever. They scored immediately after the incident.
