Barbaro Romps in Derby 132

5 week layoff? No problem. Barbaro leaves field in the dust.

All praise to Barbaro who got a perfect trip and ran away from the field convincingly to win the Derby. He is now only the 6th undefeated Derby winner (last was Smarty Jones in 2004), and his 6 1/2 length margin of victory is the largest since Triple Crown winner Assault in 1948. We will hear alot about him breaking the 5 week layoff jinx on the 50th anniversary of Needles, the last horse to do it back in 1956. We will also hear alot about how, with only 2 races in the last 13 weeks, Barbaro will be a very fresh horse as he makes his run at the Triple Crown.

Sunday morning snack: 550 roses

I loved Brother Derek at 8-1 and bet him across the board, but he couldn't overcome that outside post and had a troubled trip, 4 wide in the first turn and 8 wide in the far turn. He also lost a horseshoe during the race. He still finished in a dead heat for 4th, and his connections think that the shoe cost him 2nd place. No one was going to beat Barbaro today, but the smaller field in the Preakness will be good for Bro Derek. The rest of the highly touted California contingent did nothing.

I lost big on the Derby, but of the 6 races on the card that I bet I did have the winner of 3 of them across the board, so handicapping wise it was a good day at the track. Congratulations to my friend Sunny, who had Barbaro across the board today, and anyone else that had him as well.

More later...
