There's your Aerosmith-before-they-turned-to-shit reference for the day.
Nothing left to do but take your ball and go home.
For the 3rd time in 10 days, in a 3rd different cup competition, Arsenal ask all all the questions, dominate possession & shots, but cannot finish, take their chances, and put the ball in the back of the net, and in the end they get knocked out by a goal in the last 10 minutes against the run of play. Today's was the most maddening of all - there was no way PSV were going to score in open play unless Arsenal conceded a stupid free kick, and Hleb's completely needless foul on dude in the corner was stupider than stupid. When it happened I thought - hell, this is the only way they can score, and damn if they didn't do just that. Brasilian colossus Alex jumped 38 feet in the air to head past Mad Jens and at that point Arsenal needed 2 goals in the last 10 minutes which was never going to happen. PSV had 1 shot on net - the winner. I think Arsenal had 24 shots and couldn't even score, needing an Alex own goal to get them on the board earlier in the match.
Too pissed to write any more. More later. Maybe.

1 comment:
In a word, yes. Neither Porto nor Monaco made it to the Quarters in 05 after played in the 04 Final. In fact, only Porto made it that far that year.
And after some research, in 93, neither Barca nor Sampdoria made it to the Group Stages after their CL final at Wembley a year earlier. (Of course, the format was different back then, but still).
And of course, back in the old days of the Euro Cups, this happened alot more often.
