The Battle For Middle Earth The Internet

For all you IT folks out there, although anyone who uses the internets will eventually be affected by however this turns out. A great article about the impending battle over the future of the internet between the broadband companies (who built the pipes) and the Googles/Microsofts/Yahoos of the world (who use said pipes for free). The AT&T/Comcasts of the world want to charge the others a premium for using their infrastructure.

Anyhow, it is very interesting and provides the point of view of both sides. It is Salon, but fear not Right Wingers, it's the Technology & Business section, so the horrible fungus of liberalism will wash off easily with some mild soap. For Salon 1st timers, you have to click on the ad after the 1st paragraph, then select 'enter salon' to get the rest of the article.

What do y'all think about this?

I think this is another example of a large company getting a dose of public opinion to see how far they will go. I don't think this will ever happen, but you never know. My guess is that it will be incremental, just like everything else that tastes bad initially. It will be an "aquired taste." At&t will raise a big fuss and just put in QoS for phone and video. Then, Yahoo or someone will offer money to get in the high priority queue. Then it will snowball from there. Next thing you know, AT&T will have raised the price to us from $40/month to $75 and will be chaging the content providers by the bit also. I hope not, but we'll see. That's where fixed wireless technology could put them out of business.

Now on to the peering fees. A whole 'nother story.

Where did I put my soap. I feel like JH after a session on the internet.
